A Short History of Rattan

The history of rattan is inextricably intertwined with that of mankind. In biblical times, rattan chariots were used for hunting and warfare. Here, in the U.K., two million rattan airborne panniers were used during World War II to supply food.

Rattan comes from the Rattan Palm (CALAMUS ) and is not related to bamboo, which is hollow, whilst rattan is solid. There are at present, some 100 species of rattan, of which around 20 are suitable for furniture.

Most rattan harvesting in Malaysia is performed by the ORANG ASLI , the rainforest people, who are probably the finest harvesters in the world, with an unrivalled expertise in findings harvesting and stripping the thorny canes.

After harvesting, the rattan is cut into 10 ft lengths, treated to remove sap and improve flexibility. After chemical treatment the bark is now stripped and graded. Steam chambers make the rattan flexible.

In the U. K. rattan is now regarded as suitable for use more widely than only in the conservatory. Stylish designs, combined with exquisite colours and resistance to moisture make it especially popular in our damp climate.
